Just after announcing that it added 19 million new subscribers, Netflix announced that it’s raising prices for all 302 million U.S. subscribers.

In its quarterly earnings report for the end of last year, the company touted recent successes like the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, Squid Games 2 (on track to be its most-watched original series ever), and the two most-streamed NFL games in history. For the first time ever, Netflix boasted, its operating income surpassed $10 billion.

Those successes come with a price, though. Netflix explained it will “occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix.” Occasionally starts today, it seems, as customers will pay more starting immediately.

A standard monthly membership with no advertisements is rising $2.50 – from $15.49 to $17.99. The standard plan with ads is getting a $1 increase from $6.99 to $7.99.  The most expensive premium plan, which includes four supported devices at a time, 4K (Ultra HD) + HDR Download, two extra members who don’t live with you, and Netflix spatial audio, is getting a $2 jump from $22.99 to $24.99.

The last Netflix price increase came in October 2023, but the company essentially raised prices when it axed its most popular plan – $11.99 a month for no ads – last summer.

Netflix is by far the most popular streaming service, and its new pricing structure makes it among the most expensive. For comparison, Amazon Prime Video, the second most popular service, costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year (it’s bundled with the Amazon Prime delivery service). Disney+ is $15.99 with no ads, and ad-free Hulu is $18.99 a month.

There is a chance to save a little money though, as Netflix also rolled out a new Extra Member with Ads plan. If you’re on an ad-supported plan, you can now add someone outside your household. Previously, you could only add an extra member if you had an ad-free plan.
